Churches of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

San Miguel was first established by Fray Juan de San Miguel in 1542 and it quickly became an important commercial center for Spanish controlled Mexico. In 1769 a hero of the Mexican revolution, Ignacio de Allende was born in San Miguel. In recognition of Ignacio's efforts for Mexican independence and his sacrifice at the hands of the Spanish, the town was renamed San Miguel de Allende in 1826. In 1926 Mexico declared that San Miguel de Allende was a National Monument and preserving the historical nature of this colonial town was formalized.

The Parroquia is the largest and most distinctive church in San Miguel. Originally built in 1683 it became the center of town just opposite the main square Jardin. In 1880 the existing facade was created by Ceferino Gutierrez giving the church inspiring look.

Many other churches can be found in San Miguel. To the left is Calle San Francisco, originally constructed in 1779. To the right is the church of San Juan de Dios with it's distinctive white wash finish.

General Ignacio de Allende can be seen in many of the town's important locations. Just off the Jardin is an impressive standing statue of the general in full uniform. In the Civic Plaza is a statue of de Allende riding a horse while battling the Spanish.
