Bangkok (City of Angels) was established as the capital of Rama I's kingdom
in 1782. As part of his tradition, Rama I built a glorious temple near the royal
grounds. This temple is known as Wat Phra Kaew and houses the revered Emerald
Buddha.
The Palace and temple compound cover an area of 716,000 sq. ft. (218,400 sq.
m.). There is a wall with battlements surrounding the complex that is almost
1.2 miles (2 km.) long.
To the right is the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall. This was the original throne
hall of Rama I.
